We are at the beginning of the twentieth century, Great Britain feels the weight of the past and the United States seems free from history. The Otis family, Bostonians of iron, thus moves from one side of the Atlantic to the other, taking possession of the historic residence of Canterville Chase. The Americans, all rationalism and modern science, immediately clash with the secular and gothic beliefs of the English, in particular with the idea that the old mansion is haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville, who died three hundred years earlier in mysterious circumstances after killed his wife Lady Eleanor.
